TEU AND FEU

WHAT IS TEU?

TEU is an abbreviation for the English phrase: Twenty – Foot Equivalent Units, units equivalent to 20 feet. This is the unit used to measure the cargo capacity of the container (also known as TEU capacity or TEU tonnage).

TEU is a measure of a standard container, corresponding to length (20ft) x width (8ft) x height (8.5ft). 

There are currently 3 most common types of Cont that are standardized: 20ft x 40ft x 45ft. Thus, one TEU will be equivalent to about 39 m3 of net volume. One 20ft Cont converted out.

Use TEU to calculate vessel capacity and capacity

To classify ship sizes according to TEU, we use the following calculation:

- For small vessels, also known as small feeders of 1,000 TEU size.

- Medium vessels, or feeders of 1,000 – 2,000 TEU sizes.

- Normal ships, also known as Feedermax have sizes of 2,000 – 3,000 TEU.

- Panamax vessels have sizes ranging from 3,000 to 5,000 TEUs.

- Post Panamax vessels will range in size from 5,000 – 10,000 TEUs.

- New Panamax vessels (2014) have vessel sizes of 10,000 – 14,500 TEU.

- Ultra Large Container Vessel (ULCV) will be larger than 14,500TEU or more.
